Creating a Symbol that Represents a Career

of Giving Love and Shelter

When approached by a board member of Habitat for Humanity of Gaston County about creating a special gift for outgoing director Mary Harris, I knew just the gemstone to build around.   Years ago I had discovered that Mary, one of my fellow Rotary buddies, had a fondness for bi-color tourmaline.

I remembered that I still had a beautiful specimen that I had purchased from a Brazilian gem dealer.   A vision for the design began to develop around the gem as I began to think about all the houses that had been built under Mary's leadership, and as she organized a multitude of diverse organizations, churches, businesses and people to come together to provide permanent housing and express an out pouring of love for her community.

The overall shape represents a house and on the side panels there are images of a saw and hammer with a house and heart in the middle.  In the background is a texture made of hands that represent all the thousands of hands that Mary organized and put to work over the years.  Mary will be greatly missed, however her inspiration and example will continue to benefit our community. If you would like to support Habitat for Humanity of Gaston County Simply click on the button below to support or donate!
